NINETEEN EIGHTY-FOUR

A horrifying novel, vivid, compelling, disturbing, and even more timely now, in the 21st century, than when it was written in 1949.

The age of Big Brother could be almost upon us. Can we ever feel quite so secure again, now that Edward Snowden has revealed that, sanctioned by our global and international leaders, extensive surveillance and recording of our private phone calls and emails was carried out? Now that surveillance cameras and listening devices are almost everywhere and, now that, in our own homes, children’s toys and television sets are available that listen and then report back to their makers.

While reading this book as an adult, the reader might see the world in a different, less trusting way. However this is not only an important book. It is also a very good book, in which one cares very deeply for poor Winston Smith who is trapped in a heartless unforgiving world.

Please note there will be no book discussion in December
