ANCIENT TEXTILE ART

"Banaras is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend and looks twice as old as all of them put together” – Mark Twain

Cradled and nurtured in this ancient land was mastery in the art of weaving, perfecting some of the finest textiles known to man - the fabled Kimkhwabs, the Ganga-Jamuni and Meenakari brocades or the Jamndani, the Jamevars, the Tanchois and countless others. The pride of India and envy of the world, these textiles were!

We have with us this morning Smriti Morarka - our very own Indus member who has won the Nari Shakti Puraskar in 2018 by the Indian Government.

Today she will attempt to trace the history of these glorious textiles, putting them in the context of now and explore the role that we can play to keep alive an art form that the ravages of time have been unable to interrupt thus far.
