THE SACRED EVERYDAY
Ranjit Hoskote is a contemporary Indian poet, art critic, cultural theorist and independent curator. He is the author of five collections of poetry, is a seminal voice in Indian art criticism also authoring critical biography and major retrospective study of the major Indian artists.
Ranjit will speak about The Sacred Everyday and explores how exhibitions can act as interventions in history, art history, and visual culture. He will show the interrelationship between the divine, iconic and cosmic on the one hand, and the realm of the human, intimate and domestic on the other. Through ritual and festivity, vernacular translations, and the interplay of the sacred and the profane – which, in Indian culture, are not stark opposites, but two dynamic and interactive poles on a sliding spectrum of possibilities. This talk will blur the constrains and distinctions between ancient, medieval, modern, contemporary, urban, folk and so forth.
