VERNACULAR LANGUAGES IN URBAN INDIA

It is believed that there are 880 languages spoken in India. However, growing up in a post-colonial India, English has been perceived   as the language of power, opportunities and progress. While the English language has made us more globally connected, it has also alienated us from the indigenous. As people we have lost the ability to pass on our mother tongue to the next generation and hence our languages are at great risk of extinction.

LANGUAGE is the road map of culture - as our languages diminish, so does the culture.

Ms. Kruti Suraiya, an Indian typographer believes that new entry points to our languages can be created through design. These stories, cased in beautiful vernacular letterforms, may just be able to entice a generation steeped in English to pause, review and revisit the rich history of our country that might be otherwise lost forever.
