THE GARDEN OF EVENING MISTS
In keeping with the Indus themes of empowering women, our last book of the year takes us to the tea estates of Malaysia.
The Garden of Evening Mists chronicles the history of this South Asian nation, as it deals with a brutal past while fighting for independence
from Britain and against communism.
Teoh Yun Ling, a Malayan held prisoner of war by the Japanese, prosecutes their war criminals with fervour. Yet she turns to Nakamura Aritomo, Emperor Hirohito’s gardener to design a garden in memory of her sister killed by his people.
Tan Twan Eng’s novel highlights a woman’s struggle to overcome her tragic memories and finding peace in a turbulent time.
