Sanjeev Sonpimpare is a Mumbai based artist, who has exhibited extensively in India and abroad. After completing his studios in painting at the Sir JJ School of Art, Sonpimpare was awarded the UNESCO-Aschberg Residency at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin, which culminated in his first international solo exhibition in 2000.
Initially an abstract artist, Sonpimpare’s later works are concerned with the representation of the struggles of metropolitan life. In his works, Sonpimpare reshapes Mumbai street scenes, middle-class protagonists, magazine covers and advertorial images with humour. Currently, he is exploring and working on Ambedkarite thought.
Sonpimpare also writes on art and curated a group exhibition ‘Written on Water’ at Gallery Beyond in Mumbai, bringing together artists from across India. Sonpimpare will share his journey as an artist, touching on his early influences, his development as an artist and his vision as a curator.
