AVIATION THROUGH THE EYES OF A BABY-BOOMER – A personal journey
Rohinton Bhappu, with almost 20,000 hours of experience over four decades, was ideally positioned to caver both phases of Indian Civil Aviation, initially the robust, heavily nationalized period & then later, the opening of the skies to all Indian entrepreneurs. A third and significant portion of his career was spent overseas with the much-admired Singapore Airlines (S1A). He is therefore able to draw on this broad canvas of his multi-hued career as a Pilot.
The talk encapsulates the birth of heavier than air machines starting with the Wright Brothers and later finds its way to the shores of India under a dashing scion of the illustrious Tata family, JRD Tata, Jehangir, after his epic first race for the Aga Khan Trophy, founded Tata Air Services, a domestic airmail carrier. This bold decision would one day metamorphose to India's flag carrier, Air India. From the Puss Moth to the Queen of the skies -the B747!
From aircraft that demanded physical resources and a cockpit with multiple dials and switches, to giant birds controlled just by a gentle touch of a joy stick & colourful dials presented on LCD screens and Fly by Wire (FBY) controls. A quantum leap!
He also gives a peep into the lives of flying crews & their interaction with other members of the airline. He saves some criticism for regulator, the DGCA, and is rather candid about the failings of his own tribe. As is the custom of these talks, he is open to taking questions from the audience. so, fasten your seatbelts & welcome aboard.
