FAQs

Is membership open?

Reach out to a current Indus member to inquire about membership.

I’ve been asked to be a speaker at an event, what can I expect?

A speaker can expect a warm, engaged audience and a well-organized session focused on their area of expertise. Lectures are typically held in person at a member’s home in Mumbai, and if the speaker is based outside Mumbai, we can arrange a Zoom meeting instead. We provide all audio-visual equipment, including a microphone if needed. The format is usually lecture-style, with Q&A saved for the end, and the session is intended to be informative rather than a sales pitch.

I’m an NGO, does Indus give donations?

Donations are processed through recommendations from current members. NGOs should first go through the recommending member, who will then submit the appeal. The appeal will then be reviewed and processed internally.

Our Story

Indus International was founded in 1967 by Lorraine Hanson and a group of eminent ladies, to give women of various nationalities and diverse cultural backgrounds, living in Mumbai, the opportunity to participate jointly in activities of mutual interest. It was also created to promote friendships and to provide a meeting ground for members to exchange ideas and work toward a greater understanding of different cultures and cultural events.

The organization presently has over 300 Indian and foreign members - with a 20% requirement of non-Indian (foreign) members.

Ladies who are of Indian origin (defined as those who are eligible for an OCI card, in their own right) must apply for membership in the Indian category, irrespective of their nationality.

Members come from varied fields of life - social activists, artists, entrepreneurs, homemakers, academicians, industrialists, etc. Together, they form the essence of Indus. Today, our focus is on promoting fellowship and friendship, and providing a forum for lectures, seminars, interactive meetings, and presentations that give exposure to and educate our members on the topics covered by the organization's nine cultural activity groups.

Indus International is registered as a charitable trust and is a non-profit organization. Every year, we hold fundraising events, and significant contributions are made to a variety of social causes.
