THE ANDAMAN AND NICOBAR ISLANDS:
AN UNPARALLELLED ECOLOGICAL TREASURE
Rich tropical forests, beaches, rocky coasts, mangroves and oceans thriving with coral reefs and marine life, indigenous communities who have been here for thousands of years but are today among the most marginalised and vulnerable, and a very seismically active zone – there is so much to know and cherish about The Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Pankaj Seksaria, PhD, Associate Professor at the Centre for Technology Alternatives for Rural Areas, IIT Bombay, member of the Kalpavriksh Environmental Action Group, has worked extensively in the A&N islands and is the author/editor of ‘Islands in Flux – the Andaman and Nicobar Story’ and his debut novel ‘The Last Wave’, a deeply ecological story based in the Andamans. Today we have the rare opportunity to gain a very different perspective on a place we largely know as a tourist destination, but which is most of all a natural jewel facing unique challenges.
