BUDDIST and BRAHMANICAL CAVE ARCHITECTURE
The Heritage of Mumbai
The seven islands of Mumbai and the Islands of Sashti were important from geographical, geomorphological and commercial point of view from the early Christian era. Merchants, Traders and Pilgrims travelled to these ports via trade routes to these Ports across these islands. The Buddhist Sanghas built caves on the trade routes as a temporary resort and Mumbai was no exception.
Today we have Dr. Anita Rane –Kothare Head and Associate Professor Ancient Indian Culture, talk on important sites in Mumbai of the Buddhist era, the Kondivte or the Mahakali caves at Andheri and lesser known caves are the Magathane caves located on the western express highway in between Kandivali and Borivali.
The caves sites of Mumbai are a treasure, which should be cherished by the Mumbaikars not only for understanding our cosmopolitan traditions, our perspectives, our art, but also our rich heritage to the world which only few cities like Mumbai possesses
