COAT OF ARMS OF INDIAN PRINCELY STATES
The word Coat of Arms was first introduced in the late 18th century in Europe as a symbol of social status. It was used as a means of identification in battles and sports tournaments and gradually became an emblem of royal and noble families
In India, Coat of Arms were introduced after the great first war of independence in 1857 when the British took over the administration of India from English East India Co. To administer a vast country like India and bring the rulers closer to the British government they were given judicial powers to have their police force, mint coins and have their own Coat of Arms.
Today we have with us Shri Anuj Pakvasa an eminent numismatist and a well-known private collector of Coat of Arms. He will be displaying a variety of royal emblems from different geographic locations which reveal the history of the economic, social and cultural status, flora and fauna, and religious beliefs of different rulers of royal families and princely states.
This collection was on display at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (The Prince of Wales Museum of Western India).
