BHARATNATYAM –

THE MOTHER OF INDIAN DANCE

Today we have with us Sonal Choksey who explores the history, costumes and exponents of our traditional Bharatnatyam dance.

She did her Arangetram in 1983 under the guidance of Guru Arjun Desai and was given Visharath Certificate by Sangeet Kala Kendra. She endeavored to excel in every step and passed all Bharatnatyam examinations with distinction. She also acquired dance training in Manipuri by Guru Arjun Desai and folk-dance training by Vasundharaben.

She gave many creditable dance performances at Astik Samaj, Matunga, Dombivali Fine Arts and Kal Ke Kalakar Sammelan. Since the last 10 years, she is teaching Bharatnatyam with Ms. Varsha Barad who runs a dance school at Mahila Vikas, Lalitangi Nrityalaya.

Today Sonal will take us through this traditional dance form that encompasses music, rhythm, and expressions.
