ICE CANDY MAN

1947, the Partition of India and Pakistan is underway. Lenny a Parsi girl in Lahore, stricken by polio, is taken care of by Shanta, her Ayah, who has many admirers including the Ice Candy Man. During the riots Shanta is dragged out of the house by an angry Muslim mob and Lenny witnesses the brutal exploitation and suppression of women.  Narrated by a child protagonist Ice Candy Man, by Pakistani author Bapsi Sidhwa is about female bonding and rebellion.

Through this autobiographical account of her personal experiences of partition, Sidhwa’s novel is the first one by a Pakistani woman that deals with partition and its aftermath. Deepa Mehta’s movie Earth is based on this book.

The Partition is a fading word in history books and first-hand accounts will vanish soon. Members if you have family whose stories you can share with us please do join us in discussing this historical fiction.
