BOMBAY PAPERIE

With the digital revolution, Bombay Paperie is living its dream of reviving the art of making paper by hand.

In the 17th century, paper was made by hand outside the walls of the Daulatabad fort in Western India. Emperor Jehangir had issued an edict that all paper used in his court should come from Daulatabad.

This paper was made of pulp and became famous all over the Middle East and India and slowly replaced the then popular paper from Persia.

With the technological revolution, use of paper was on the decline but the “kagzi’s” who are descendants of the original paper makers are doing their bit to keep this craft alive.

The Bombay Paperie seeks to assist them in breathing new life into this dying craft. With the support of the two last remaining master paper makers, training is available to the younger generation to take over this paper mill.

Riddhi Jhaveri is the proud owner who also showcases this thin but strong paper, each sheet lifted by hand and block printed in gold ink by artists from Ahemdabad.

You are invited to be part of this journey and try your hand at making an artefact. Your presence can make a difference in preserving this ancient art.
