FEET and HANDCRAFTED FOOTWEAR in the INDIAN TRADITION

Among the diverse people of the Indian subcontinent, the foot is considered both the most base and most venerated part of the body. Today, we have with us, the talented Ileshaa Khatau, of Parvati Villa. She will address the symbolism of feet in the Indian tradition, the cultural connotations of footwear, the changes in style over the ages, regional variations in design and materials used, as well as the technical process used by artisans today.    The talk will be followed by a live demonstration and a discussion of how shoes can and should be customised to fit the needs of individual feet.
