INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY

Dr Gireesh Warawdekar is a senior consultant with 23 years experience and the President of the Indian Society of Vascular and Interventional Radiology. Carotid artery angioplasty and stenting, treatment of  aortic aneurysms with stent-grafts, fallopian tube re-canalization and intra-cranial stenting are some of the procedures pioneered by him in India.

Today he will speak to us about interventional radiology, a relatively new branch of radiology wherein various procedures are performed with the help of needles, wires and catheters and probably the first step towards minimally invasive surgeries. Interventional procedures using this basic method are undertaken to diagnose and treat diseases of the blood vessels, bile ducts, female reproductive system, urinary tract, certain cancers in the liver, bile ducts, and the pancreas. With advent of the specialty, major and complicated surgeries can be avoided.
