Walking with the Buddha – From India to Southeast Asia

Pia Rampal is the co-head of docent training at the Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM) in Singapore. She has led exhibition research groups and lectured for the Monday Morning series at the museum. During a career in advertising at JWT in Chicago, Mumbai and London, Pia became interested in symbolism in communication. This interest followed her to Singapore where she discovered ancient symbolism at the ACM. Pia went back to study at SOAS where she obtained a postgraduate degree in Asian Art (Indian, Buddhist and Islamic).

Pia will take us on a journey through the collection of the ACM to study the evolution of the Buddha image from India to Southeast Asia. We will look closely at Buddha images in Kedah, the Khmer Bayon, Sukhothai home of the walking Buddha, Pagan and enigmatic Borobudur. To paraphrase Tagore, we will “see India everywhere, but find it nowhere.”
